Leningrad, city-hero
Good safety tip, Egon.

During World War II, the city of Leningrad (as it was known from 1924 to 1991) was blockaded and under siege by the Germans for over 900 days, from 8 September 1941 to 27 January 1944. This small, informal memorial on Nevsky Prospekt centers on the only remaining sign of its kind in Saint Petersburg. The blue stencil painting reads, "Citizens! During artillery shelling this side of the street is especially DANGEROUS." The smaller plaque below it reads, "In memory of the heroism and courage of the Leningraders in the days of the 900-day blockade."

Ploshchad' Vosstaniya

After WWII, the city of Leningrad was awarded the Order of Lenin as a "City-Hero." This sign at Ploshchad' Vosstaniya (Uprising Square) hails "City-Hero Leningrad."
